  • "Interesting. Thoughts below!- If shipping a FULLY assembled chair - obviously space is expensive as chairs generally are not very space efficient. On the other hand, many chairs are designed to be pack flat or KD to increase cube (container loading), drastically increasing efficiency over fully assembled chairs.- I'm interested to learn more about the actual component breakdown. Metal hinges are expensive and with limited space in those interlocking "finger joint" areas - likely a weak point. A living hinge (like leather which is a referenced material) - this is another idea - but also concerning from a cost perspective. - I'm also interested to learn about manufacturing method. CNC is expensive in many parts of the world (both overhead cost as well as electricity cost which actually drives a large amount of production cost). On the other hand - this piece looks to feature a lot of small intricate type cutouts. In general - it's cool to see it shaped out of one singular piece of cardboard and to so easily fold up to save space. I'd reckon that it's actually more interesting from a wastage perspective than a pack flat perspective. PS --- happy to see an EDI alum recognized!"

  • "No idea why IKEA did not pass the safety standards. Given that IKEA is such a big global company, they may have felt that the standards in other countries that they passed were sufficient. It can be difficult to navigate regulations and standards in multiple markets - but willful neglect or plain ignorance that results in accidents that can be avoid is generally unacceptable. I expect this is one reason why IKEA is being made an example of in the US."

  • "The problem with the IKEA's Malm series is that none of the case pieces meet an industry standard which was developed in 2000 to combat this very issue of tipover. ASTM F2057 specifically addresses the stability of "clothing storage units", and includes two performance tests that evaluate for the stability of an unloaded dresser (worst case scenario). IKEA explicitly admits that these products do not meet the performance standards set forth in this industry standard in their recall press release. As a design focused website - perhaps more emphasis should be placed on the fact that IKEA did not design around the industry standard (either of ignorance or negligence), or more importantly more on educating future furniture designers on various tools available to them, such as industry standards groups, etc. "

  • "Same thoughts at Ben. I've worked with furniture factories overseas that often use this or similar tools to create a rustic/country or distressed look and feel. You need those thick veneers because you're actually removing a significant amount of material - though probably that is a bit more thick than actually necessary. The amount wire brush effect can be modified by changing the wire material, gauge, and how much force is applied with each pass. The pictures show what must have been a pretty very aggressive pass or passes, resulting in removal of almost all the wood fibers. "
