  • "I've had a couple of one square foot solar panels in my one south-facing window in my bedroom charging two battery powered lights that a friend helped me modify to accept the solar charge into their rechargeable D cells (and I had to try two different brands of rechargeable D cells to find the ones that worked) for about 15 years now.  At one point, this was called "green wiring."I also have a third iteration of my solar backpack with a $10 solar light and charger attached to it which I use as my bike light.  I've had a home-brew solar backpack for over a decade now.  It gets frustrating to be the only person I see walking around MIT, Harvard, and the streets of Cambridge, MA with a solar backpack when practical small solar is so affordable.PS:  A solar light and charger is entry level electricity for the billion or so people who don't have access to electricity now.  We could provide such electricity for all of them at that $10 retail price for a day or two's global spending on the military.  Too bad nobody with power has recognized that reality.  Yet."
