"The name is actually a pun on Ruhrschnellweg, which was the fast road through the Ruhr district before there were Autobahns. Schnell, of course, means fast or rapid and Weg is way or path. People still refer to the Ruhrschnellweg even though it’s long since been incorporated into the many Autobahn sections in the area."
