"When it comes to wine bottles, I have been told the punt (indent on the bottom) was for pouring. Holding the bottom of the bottle in your palm you pinch with the thumb in the punt. Bubbly wines have a deeper indent which seemed to support this idea. Personally, it seemed like a pretentious technique that someone ran with for style points over function but there you go."
