"Is it possible its a minimalist type thing, where space saving was / is a must, a bit like the ikea ethos,  so one could imagine there wouldn't have been a wardrobe but maybe a  sliding rod of some sort would slide  out to hang things temporarily, also people would have had less clothes back in the 60s."
