"I do not think its "totally gross" although it defiantly like it would get dirty and be a pain to clean thoroughly.  From a cleanliness perspective carpet is not a great choice, especially the style incorporated in this stool.  Having that on your floor would be a nightmare. Hard surfacing you still have the option to throw down a carpet in the right spot."
