"After a cursory search, I was unable to find any US or North American companies that manufacture LED chips. My guess is that an overwhelming percentage of LED chips for general lighting are manufactured in China. When our town made the switch to LED traffic lights, the green LEDs were not yet reliable. There were numerous failures leading to interesting abstract lighting designs. Eventually they were either replaced with whatever old technology was used or better green LEDs. The shorter the wavelength the harder it is to make. I used some of the first UV LED arrays (made by Phoseon in Oregon) to cure the polymer layer of a thin-film encapsulation for organic LEDs (OLEDs). They were a god-send and eliminated the massive heat load generated by mercury vapor bulb UV sources. "
"Looking at the Kickstarter page, the team cost and operations cost stay the same when the R&D costs drop from $44 to $4. Who is doing the R&D for the different cases? Is this being outsourced to within the US and China, respectively? "
"It is 4 days after this was posted, so I don't know if anyone will see my comment. I worked for 20 years towards flexible barrier technology for electronic devices, such as solar cells and OLED displays. The work towards the latter was successful and is now used for all OLED displays fabricated on flexible substrates. It is not something that can be ignored or delayed when developing these devices. They may have think that they have done the hard work, but they are still a long way from home. If they contact 3M for a flexible barrier film, they are likely to find that it costs a lot more than the photovoltaic film on a square meter basis. Another consideration is solar cell performance degrades as you scale up the process. It will take much work to attain their smaller scale numbers. Wishing them luck."
"The package shows 12 dB protection. Conventional ear plugs provide about 28 dB protection. "superior sound absorption" is perhaps a fraudulent claim?"
"Agree with Ryan. Diesel is illegal in my jurisdiction and electric requires 3 phase (not convenient for me). I use a small Karcher around the house but never tried it on a car. "
