"Riding in the middle of the lane is (at least in my humble experience based on cycling in Bulgaria) a pretty good recipe to annoy drivers. Moving faster does make it better (I ride a road bike, and that changes the way you're looked at), but as far as I'm concerned, it's more of a psychological problem. Someone driving a car will simply take it for granted that he needs to overtake (and do it immediately). Moving faster wouldn't eliminate the problem. I completely agree with some of the comments below that cyclist are, sometimes, also to blame. When a cyclist wants to use a whole lane, he needs to behave more like a car - with some kind of signaling when turning etc. And in Bulgaria for example, you're only allowed to ride up to 1 meter away from the left end of the road.In conclusion: the only way to address the issue is with respect: making drivers acustomed to us, as well as being more careful ourselves."
