  • "My introduction to injection moulding was on the job during my first solo product. I had a whole new appreciation for the phrase "baptism by fire" after that project. Thankfully my tool maker/manufacturer was a total champion and was very patient/helpful through the process. IM is more of a dark art than science that really needs to be taught through experience - my toolmaker once said "I can't tell you what you can do, but I can tell you what you can't". That back-and-forth process probably thought me more than any classroom could have. I was very lucky and had an openminded toolmaker that let me push the boundaries of what he and I both thought possible to achieve beautiful finish quality in some challenging shapes using a very finicky material.Bayer also produces a number of awesome design guides that everyone should be aware of! My two favourites are:http://edge.rit.edu/content/P12056/public/Part+and+Mold+Design.pdf http://fab.cba.mit.edu/classes/S62.12/people/vernelle.noel/Plastic_Snap_fit_design.pdf **Shamless plug: I highly recommend Turnkey (http://www.turnkeytechnologyinc.ca) if you're looking for an injection moulder. They have a very cool approach with aluminum tooling that keeps costs low but with tool life like steel. They do awesome work and have saved my ass many times!"
