  • "Very nice. I particularly liked the portion on making tapered polygons to arrange the grain on a wide panel glue-up. I had never come across that before."
    on: The Exploitation of Wood
  • "At the time the Wood River tools were released, a lot of folks defended them, saying that Lie Nielsen had copied Stanley, so why shouldn't Woodcraft? Well, Bedrock planes and Stanley chisels had been off the market for many decades, and no one had produced them since. Lie Nielsen took time and money to improve the Stanley designs, and market new, improved tools. Woodcraft literally just sent Lie Nielsen planes to be copied as-is. The foundry marks on Lie Nielsen tools showed up on Wood River castings. I would never buy a tool from a company that did that. I don't care what name their marketing division chose to slap on it.The same goes for Stanley's new "Sweetheart" chisels. Lie Nielsen took the time and effort to redesign and popularize a tool, and Stanley thought they would just squeeze a profit from someone else's efforts. When Lie Nielsen started in the backsaw business, they could have just copied old Disstons, or Simmons, etc. Instead, they purchased the rights to Independence Saw, the company that had already redesigned the backsaw and had been producing them. Lie Nielsen could have just made a saw, and buried their competition. Instead, they did it the right way.I've always admired the way that Lie Nielsen and Lee Valley compete. They each make their own unique designs, and don't step on each other's toes. They both succeed, and we as customers benefit. They are two distinct companies and choices. That's much better than ripping someone else off to make a quick buck."
