  • "This would be much less likely on a car with a manual transmission (the distinction between a forward gear – any of them, really –, neutral and reverse is *very* noticeable) and a mechanical parking brake (ditto for that, if you manage to start driving with the parking brake ever-so-slighthly engaged, most modern cars start beeping like crazy)…Though it *does* happen (a colleague of mine's stepdad just died a few months in the same fashion), and since it can happen on less than steep and even on steep inclines because of sheer oversight, that “automatic braking when opening the doors” function is very intriguing. It makes me even reconsider the mechanical parking brake interface (not my manual transmission and gear shifter, you will have to pry those off my cold, dead hands – hopefully not after a car crash, knock on wood) altogether.Meh, cars will mostly feature electric powertrains and self-driving systems anyway, so I will eventually have to let go of them out of my own volition. :P"
