  • "In discussing this same photo with some bike commuting design colleagues, we concluded that this object was likely placed here not to allow people this comfort, but to *prevent* them from performing the same maneuver using the pole in front (which would put much of the bike, in not the rider, into traffic)"

  • ">> "I found a clever way to use twice as much metal without conveying any benefit to the end user."To me this actually looks like a clever way to re-purpose off cuts from rectangular steel tubing (say, if you were welding up a really beefy frame and had a few inches left over) into drawer pulls without needing any extra hardware. But I love these design roasts and don't want to ruin the fun :D"

  • "It's a nice tutorial for this mold making technique and a fun final shape for a candy, but, imo, this is a really poor solution for an actual problem. Just design the gummy size and concentration so that each one is the smallest possible dose (e.g. 1-2 mg). Why have a "serving" be 1–1/6 of a giant gummy when you can just design a serving to be 1–6 pieces? Much more repeatable. "

  • "It's likely that the large areas of shiny white are just to make the bike much more visible in low light compared to the stock dark paint, but it also helps protect the paint from scratches and chips from locking up to street signs. All those dings in the paint accumulate pretty quickly and then the wet salty conditions of urban winter biking can lead to serious rusting. Those DIY bubble wrap bar mitts are great, but if you want a solid OTS solution, you can get great neoprene ones for 12 bucks on amazon that even include reflective patches. "

  • "There are lots more good reasons to add fillets when designing for 3D printing. Many times you need to worry about the unsupported overhang length and angle, which can be fixed with carefully considered orientation and well placed fillets. In generally when designing for 3DP (for SLA and FDM; less important with SLS), I try to use fillets to minimize the change in x-sectional area from layer to layer. This is an SLA specific design guide for the Form 2, but it helps to explain why certain geometries are harder to print https://formlabs.com/media/upload/formlabs-design-guide.pdf"
