"@andrew - It's actually five weeks, but you're right, it's not a lot of time! Unfortunately it's what I have to work with so we are squeezing in as much design and fun as possible!"
"I attended RISD's Summer Studies program last summer and did classes in ID Rendering and Welding for Furniture Design. The classes themselves were fantastic. The program itself, though, is pretty bad. There are limited chances to meet other students - you only ever meet people outside of your class by accident or through mutual friends. Plus the meal plan is awful - cheaper and more delicious to eat off campus for every meal. Providence itself is a great place for burgeoning designers, but the nightlife is lacking (unless you really really like hipster dance clubs that have park benches and ping pong tables). I'd recommend it for the classes, but know that you're going to have to find people and things to do on your won."
"@ J and John Jakob - Well put. You're right, my thoughts about manga are really just was personal preference and are extraneous to the article. I just meant to add emphasis to the fact I find Akira absolutely fantastic! But I could have done that more effectively.
@ Joshua Ben Longo, Tanuki, Nat O - All great calls! Keep suggesting titles - maybe we'll have to do a Part 2..."
"@ Adam - I think your definition of "design" is rather subjective. You seem to suggest that design as a universal concept must be only one thing or another. The many facets of design are as varied as humans are varied. Not all design is used to solve hunger nor kill people with audio frequencies. A torture device can be just as well designed as a Herman Miller chair, but that doesn't mean all design is torture devices or all design is Herman Miller chairs."
"@NWO, Etoile, and d3r - I've been following the NYPD response to the Occupy Wall Street protests as well. There are some very troubling questions that come out of that situation, although their place is not necessarily on Core77.
Indeed, perhaps the NYPD does take place in this current "fear industry." In this post, however, I just wanted to spotlight an attempt at a solution to a very complex, very difficult problem - and not glorify OR demonize the NYPD either way."
