"Well, I grew up in the sixties when we did not have bicycle elements. And today, though I have one, if I'm on a dedicated path for recreational use, I will sometimes still ride without one. However, I'm an "experienced" rider who has spent years prior, learning to ride without them due to being invented yet.I also ride motorcycle. So...I think it's pretty silly for some one to knock something that was made for a specific purpose. And those elements came about for a reason. My wife, has Epilepsy. Due to a head injury. A helmet could have prevented that.I myself, back in '75, while riding My bicycle home one evening with my room mate, had some idiot in a Beetle Big pull up behind me, then pulled around me, then flat turned in front of me as we were riding down a four lane boulevard. The bike slammed into the side of his car. I flew, (No helmet in those days.) over the top of his car and seeing that I was clear of the asphalt but not the oncoming concrete of a driveway, raised my arms up and covered my head to protect it. I hit the concrete and slid, tearing up the backside of my hands and arms. Then I went into slight shock as I fell over and laid in the road. But I had saved my head.Within minuyes an ambulance and cops where on the scene, and the driver was told; (No kidding. I heard it.) "You are going to pay for this boy!"If you think you can avoid a wreck like this while riding and not wearing a helmet then, ok.You can throw it away.Me, any time I'm on a "public" road, I like to wear that uncomfortable helmet. You see, it's not my driving that scares me.ITS THEIRS!"
